Russian minister states Nord Stream assault sheds light on necessity for just energy transition
The panel included Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksander Pankin, Tanzanian Deputy Prime Minister Doto Mashaka Biteko, Pakistani Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, and African Energy Chamber Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk.
Tsivilev argued that many misunderstand the global energy transition as being solely about decarbonization and renewables. He insisted that energy transitions must take into account each nation’s unique circumstances, ensuring energy security and affordability. “Energy must reach every home and business at prices people can actually pay,” he said, stressing the importance of clean but reliable energy production.
The minister pointed to the Nord Stream pipeline as an example of injustice in the energy sector. Built to deliver affordable Russian gas to Europe and support rapid industrial growth, it was sabotaged to block access to cheap energy, Tsivilev claimed.
He further criticized the blanket push for decarbonization, saying it jeopardizes energy security. As evidence, he cited a massive blackout across the Iberian Peninsula, which he blamed on overdependence on unstable energy sources like solar and wind.
Tsivilev concluded by warning that decisions made today about energy policy will shape the future for generations to come, especially in light of the expected surge in global energy demand.
